Brussels, 13 October 2026 – Agroecology Europe is today celebrating its tenth anniversary, having successfully connected researchers, farmers, civil society organisations and social movements, and having brought agroecological perspectives into European policy discussions. The organisation is looking forward to developing the presence of its member organisations during its second decade and amplifying their contribution to the agroecological transition across the continent.
“From the initial idea that emerged at a workshop during the 2015 World Expo in Milan to an established organisation with a Secretariat and staff in Brussels, Agroecology Europe has taken important steps since its official foundation in 2016. We can be proud of the growing visibility of agroecology across Europe and of the many people and member organisations contributing to its development,” says Alexander Wezel, President of Agroecology Europe.
Over the past decade, Agroecology Europe has contributed to advancing agroecology through policy engagement, research and collaboration across the European agroecology community. It has contributed to multiple European Commission expert and civil dialogue groups, covering areas such as the Common Agricultural Policy, farmland, soil, climate and environmental policy, and international agricultural relations. The association has also contributed to public consultations and policy roadmaps on sustainable food systems, organic farming, pesticides, biodiversity and soil health.
Agroecology Europe has also contributed to OASIS (Original Agroecological Survey and Indicator System), a framework that assesses a farm’s progress towards agroecology by looking at farming practices alongside economic viability, social and political aspects, biodiversity and resilience.
Alongside this work, the association has helped build connections across the agroecology community. Its five biennial European Forums on Agroecology have brought together more than 1,500 farmers, researchers, civil society organisations and social movements to exchange knowledge and build collaboration. The next Forum is planned for 2027 in Coimbra, Portugal.
“Agroecology Europe’s strength lies in bringing together people from different backgrounds who share a commitment to transforming our food systems. Our work focuses on creating opportunities for collaboration, ensuring that diverse perspectives are heard, by connecting knowledge with action. As we enter our second decade, we want to build on the experience and commitment of our members and partners, strengthen our engagement across Europe and continue advocating for the conditions that enable agroecological transitions across Europe,” says Henriette Christensen, Executive Director of Agroecology Europe.
