On April 29th, Agroecology Europe members gathered to launch the new International Working Group.
Agroecology is developed and implemented globally, and promoted across a wide range of international forums. Many around the world recognise agroecology as the best framework for guiding food systems towards resilience, fairness, and sustainability. Connecting with like-minded organisations in other parts of the world to collaborate, share knowledge, and learn from one another, is a key priority for Agroecology Europe.
Agroecology Europe is already active internationally. In the area of research, the organisation works with African partners to test the OASIS monitoring tool for assessing agroecology. Through the Agroecology Partnership, Agroecology Europe participates in work packages that build connections with organisations and projects beyond the EU.
In terms of policy, the EU’s food and agriculture system plays a significant role in shaping food systems globally, through free trade agreements and other forms of cooperation. Therefore, advocating for and implementing agroecology at the EU level cannot be separated from its possible impacts on other regions of the globe: agroecological territorial food systems should be imbued with respect for food sovereignty and food security around the world.
Agroecology is increasingly recognised by international stakeholders as a key solution to global challenges such as food insecurity, climate change, desertification, and biodiversity loss. It has gained growing support in international processes including the CFS, UNFCCC, UNCBD, and UNCCD. Yet the policies and recommendations developed at the international level do not sufficiently translate to regional and national action, a gap that Agroecology Europe aims to help bridge.
Peer-learning, collaboration, and mutual support are central to the agroecology transformation. Through this new working group, Agroecology Europe seeks to deepen its relationships with regional and international organisations, networks, and coalitions. The first meeting brought together interested Agroecology Europe members to share ideas and explore commitments for a space dedicated to exchange and peer-learning.
